Some very useful General Preparedness Hints
1) Make sure you store a good variety of foods of high quality.
2) Use your storage foods so that you are use to cooking with them and your family is use to eating them. This is not something you want to have to learn under stress.
3) Make sure you have a hand grinder in your storage. What good is all that Wheat if you can't use it?
4) Cooking oil is an extremely important item to have in your storage program. It adds calories and flavor and it is very hard to cook without. Most people don't know that you can store Oils for a very long time very easily.
5) A good variety of spices and flavorings are an absolute must in a livable storage program. Imagine trying to cook without basics like salt and pepper. You can do it, but why put yourself through that kind of experience when you could easily just include the basics in your ood storage program.
6) Whenever you serve a bean dish include rice, wheat or corn as part of the menu. The combination of one of these grains along with the beans provides a complete protein. Some suggestions are beans served over rice, chili and corn bread, or bean soup and wheat bread.
7) Add a little sugar to your dehydrated vegetables to improve the flavor.
8) Store your foods in a cool, dry place away from the sunlight to protect their shelf life.
10) Rotate your storage. Not only does this insure that your food is too old when you want to use it, but you're also accustomed to eating it and know how to cook with it. This is a super idea psychologically al well. If you are already accustiomed to using your food storage, it will help keep actual emergencies from seeming so intense. The more things remain stable and the same, the less your perception is of the severity of an emergency.
